Vitamix Smoothies

Ratios, ingredient roles, and templates for building smoothies that actually taste good.

The five elements of a good smoothie

Balance these and you can build almost anything.

01Base Solids

Fruit, vegetables, yogurt, oats, nut butter, protein powder, seeds

02Liquid

Water, milk, soy milk, oat milk, kefir, juice, coconut water

03Cold / Temperature

Frozen fruit, ice, chilled liquids, fresh produce

04Thickness / Body

Banana, mango, avocado, yogurt, oats, chia, nut butter

05Flavor Direction

Bright, creamy, dessert-like, tart, green, spiced, chocolate

Ingredient order for a Vitamix

Load in this sequence every time. Cavitation (spinning air pocket, zero progress) almost always comes from frozen chunks sitting on the bottom.

1

Liquids first

Blades grab liquid first and pull everything downward.

2

Soft / fresh ingredients

Easier for blades to reach before frozen weight compresses.

3

Powders / nut butters / yogurt

Sit above the liquid layer, get pulled down into the vortex.

4

Leafy greens

Compress down under the frozen weight above them.

5

Frozen ingredients & ice on top

Prevents cavitation. Blends down into liquid rather than spinning air.

Core heuristics

If you remember nothing else, remember these.

Normal starting point

250–320 g liquid + 300–450 g produce + 20–30 g optional rich add-ins + 20–30 g protein if desired.

Start low, go high

Ramp speed from low to high. Blend until the sound changes from chunky chaos to smooth vortex.

Fully frozen? Skip the ice.

Frozen fruit is a better cold source than ice — ice dilutes flavor and roughens texture.

Brightness is usually missing

Sweetness alone does not equal good taste. Lemon, lime, ginger, or pineapple fixes most flat smoothies.

Thickeners stack fast

Protein powder + oats + chia + nut butter all pull liquid. Add more liquid or reduce one of them.

Kale needs a plan

Spinach is forgiving. Kale needs fruit + acid + ginger. 20–60 g is plenty.
